These strings, where are you finding these strings?
All I can find is three text files with UI positions and sound settings.
Is there some sort of a guide to this?

Great find on that one, its like we are doing our own version of snopes in gw's dat file

Strings appear in the "UNKNOWN" type files, for the most part. Looking in the original GWDat viewer will show those as mostly random looking stuff, with occasional strings in Unicode (meaning strings A.p.e.a.r. .l.i.k.e. .t.h.i.s when using the readable part of the hex viewer). People who find strings are either looking in there, or (more likely) they have modified the source to automatically find and dump the strings.

Antigorgo has the gwdatbrowser dump all the text strings and then compares them to the last dat file strings then it spits out the changes from one to the other. It isnt a difficult concept I am just not able to do so without alot of manual work as I am unable to customize the datbrowser to extract the txt strings and then compare without lots of hand time

I would say it is unlikely that it will be updated, Anti didnt create the browser, he just updated it the way he wants it, if others want to do what he does, you can either do it yourself, give sexual favors to anti (not going to work but worth a shot for his regard) or sit back and wait for news

If you want the gw.dat browser to advance go to the relevant thread on the xentax forum and tell the coders how much you appreciate their work and how you are looking forward to updates.
I doubt they know all this interest exists, and the best way to show them is in their arena.

Ok now, i found one with like a bunch of tutorial messages.
Heres a helpful TIP:
Extract it, when you open it in in notepad its all spaced out, very hard to search the file this way.
To get rid of the spaces but keep the spacing between words, do this:
Press CTRL+H or go into edit/replace...
Click within "Find What" and press space TWICE...
Click within "Replace With" and type "{A}" (without the quotations)...
Click Replace All
Click "Find What" again and reduce it to ONE space...
Click "Replace With" and empty it...
Click Replace All
Click "Find What" again and enter "{A}"...
Click "Replace With" and put in ONE space...
Click Replace all and you're done!
You can now search the file for words like "Crystalline" without having to type "c r y s t a l l i n e". It's also easier to read.
Anyway, just thought it might help (unless im late to this conecept).
EDIT: Some Bork! stuff I found:
Code:
Yuoo aere-a a hurse-a!. Yuoo aere-a a sheep!T Yuoo aere-a a munkey! Bork! Bork! Bork!2 Yuoo aere-a a ruuster!* Yuoo aere-a a dug!

If you're extracting the file, then just use strings.exe.
Something like strings.exe -u 12345Unknown.raw > output.txt.
You can then open the output.txt in notepad. And voila, all the strings, non the fuss.

I'm half-way not giving it out because a lot of people on these forums are asshats. The other half is that the "user interface" for comparing the files is basically non-existent. You have to go in and rename files and stuff for all the comparing to work and I'd rather not get PMs with people asking why stuff doesn't work when I don't really care to work on making it "pretty" for Joe Shmoe user.
To be honest, it isn't really anything terribly exciting. You're better off waiting for someone to find the goodies for you, I think people are pretty quick to post changes after a new build comes out.

You cannot check changes unless you backup each file until the next change and then compare...

I don't think I said that -- I save off the CRCs to a file each time you run the GWDatBrowser to a file called CRC.dat and it checks the CRCs against a file named CRC_old.dat. So you have to rename/copy CRC.dat to CRC_old.dat to run the comparison correctly.
Not terribly tricky or exciting, but I know that not everyone who thinks they are uber-leet hackers and want to surf the .dat file and tell all their friends how super awesome they are are able to grasp the concept so I've given my modified version to another person to use (since I'm not really playing the game much anymore) and leave it at that...

Aaargh! Rick Rolled!
Also, does anyone know if there is a way to sort the data file by two things? (Such as file type and ID#)
That way I can find the newest/oldest DAT things and simultaneously, specifically, ones of a certain type.

Did a diff on the gw.dat and saw this.
Quote:
Yes, change it. I want to see concise skill descriptions in-game. Concise descriptions have a new format designed to make skills more compact.
Example of concise style for %str1%:
%str2%
No, leave it. I want to see the traditional skill descriptions in-game. Traditional descriptions maintain the classic style and have been in place since the first campaign.
Example of traditional style for %str1%:
%str2%
To change skill-format style while in-game, use the General tab in the Options panel.
Note: This message appears only one time. After you make your selection (below), login will continue like normal.
Guild Wars now supports two types of skill description: traditional and concise.
To continue, please make a selection:
